The Witches, which features some surprising Nicolas Roeg direction (who knew he could pull off a movie for children, but then this seems like a fit if anything for his views of nutty outsiders and dangerous intrigue) and Jim Henson's creature shop effects and make-up, is Rrther creepy and wonderful, though I think the use of wide angles is so much in abundance Terry Gilliam might say 'ease up fellas. The prosthetics on the actors, Huston most of all, is great as is the puppeteering (you feel the tension when a mouse is on a ladle hanging over a shelf over a giant pot of soup) though the child actors are pretty weak (expected) giving Angelica Huston ample room to steal the show as well she should. Rowan Atkinson is also a little wasted but does what he can. And at first I found the rather 'oh, I'm a mouse, OK then' reaction a little pat. But then kids I guess are resilient in the face of being transformed (presumably for forever) into another species amid a convention of witches.

For me, I didn't see the movie until I was older but something that stuck with me when I read the book as a kid was how the boy decided to stay a mouse so he and his grandmother could die together. My father had died suddenly from a heart attack only a year or two before I read this, if I recall my age properly. And at the time, I spent a LOT of time at my grandparent's house because my now single mother had two kids and work to balance, so I got super attached to my Grandma. I remember laying next to her in bed and remembering the book mentioning how fast the boy's heart beat as a mouse in comparison to a human heart and it made me notice that as a small child, I breathed faster than my Grandma. I don't think it really scarred me and it didn't give me any nightmares but it made me weirdly aware of different things in my life. I don't remember it, but knowing my thought process as a kid, I probably thought at some point that I would have liked to only live as long as my Grandma, too. (I had an odd idea that I'd die tragically young, NO idea where such an idea of random death could have come from. It's a bit of a downer ending since it basically spells out that yes, this child is going to die in a few years and he's completely cool with that. But it was also weirdly heartwarming. I wish if I knew how many years I had left, I could be as at peace with it as him.

Huston (The Addams Family) plays Miss Ernst aka the Grand High Witch who is their leader and an old foe of Helga's. After she turns Luke and other boy, Bruno (Potter) into mice, they and Helga try to stop her and the other witches. Atkinson (Mr. Bean) plays Mr. Stringer, the manager of the hotel. I grew up watching this and always enjoyed it. Huston is great in it and there's neat effects. I recommend this good children's fantasy.

Something about them moving out and no matter how much she screams they can't hear her. 2) it's revealed that her ghost was in the doctored photos the entire time. 3) the bad dreams Alice describes play out scene by scene as they show the family moving out of their house. Living Alice was seeing into her future and beyond her death. She not only had the encounter at Lake Mungo, but she was seeing how her family would be after her death. but she didn't realize it was after her death reactions she was foreseeing. Tragically, her ghost is haunting her family, but as they did in life they don't notice her.
